Care Provided

Sexual assault is a frightening and traumatic experience. Our SANE nurses provide a safe, compassionate exam and empower the patient to determine their plan of care, including:

  • Emotional support
  • Preventive treatment for sexually transmitted infections
  • Emergency contraception
  • Physical examination and wellness check
  • Collection of medical-forensic evidence
  • Counseling in regards to with concerns about sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy
  • Development of a medical follow-up plan 
  • Referrals

Follow-Up Care

After the exam, a SANE nurse will call the patient to discuss follow-up medical care as appropriate and may refer the patient to professionals who can provide additional services. We operate within the local Judicial District, with local advocacy agencies, emergency departments, and law enforcement agencies within our servicing counties.

We provide care for sexual assault victims in an exceptionally supportive environment. Additionally, we strive to help victims cope with a variety of issues. Evidence by our trained professional’s leads to an increase in prosecution rates and credible, neutral courtroom testimony.

Do I have to pay for my services?

Within our service area, anyone who is need of services shall have the right to have a forensic medical examination. A victim shall not be required to pay, directly or indirectly, for the cost of a forensic medical examination. 

Our Services

Many times, a sexual assault will leave no injuries. We work as part of a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and perform medical forensic exams for sexual assault.

What is involved in the exam?

The SANE may perform the following during the Medical Forensic Exam:

  • Obtain a detailed history of the assault or abuse.
  • Provide a detailed, comprehensive medical examination.
  • Perform a detailed genital examination, which may include an examination with a speculum.
  • Collect biological or trace samples from your body, including blood or urine.
  • Remember, you have the right to decline any or all parts of the Medical Forensic Exam.
